January Online Competition & Meet

General Information

The January Online Competition & Meet will be held on Sunday January 30th starting at 1 pm. Schedule is below.

The event will be hosted in the Ottawa Cubing Discord server for video and chat and CubingTime to record the competition's results.

The format of the event is made to resemble a WCA style competition. Competitors will first be invited to join a "waiting room" on Discord with other competitors, where they will be free to talk to other competitors, discuss, practice solving on CubingTime, etc. as they please. Once a competitor's group is announced, they will join the corresponding room on CubingTime and the competition channel on Discord where they will share their video feed for a judge to supervise their competition solving. Spectators will be able to watch using a live stream.

To participate in the competition, you will need:

  • CubingTime account (free) and a Discord account (free)

  • Device with working camera and microphone (can be computer or smartphone)

  • Be able to read standard cube notation to scramble a cube (ex. R U L’ D2…)

  • Have something that can cover a cube (piece of paper is sufficient)

You may also participate in the meet without competing by simply joining the Ottawa Cubing Discord server and participating in the waiting room voice / chat channels.

For more details, see below. A schedule and competition group information will be sent to those who registered once the registration is closed.

General Schedule and Summarized Competition Directives

Basic Competition Rules

When your group is up, join the Competition audio channel in the Ottawa Cubing Discord server. Turn on your mic and camera, point it so we can see your cube.

Solves will be done in a CubingTime room corresponding to your group. When you enter, first make sure to enable inspection (see screenshots in Detailed Competition Directives below). If it's not there yet, wait for it to be created.

During a round, you’ll have 5 solves which you will do at the same time as others in your group.

When directed by the judge, scramble your cube according to the provided on-screen scramble, then cover it. We will be working on a best effort basis, and won’t be checking to make sure every cube is scrambled correctly.

When you are ready, tap the spacebar, uncover and inspect your cube! Within 15 seconds, when you’re ready, tap the spacebar again and solve the cube, finishing with another spacebar press. Press enter to submit your time.

Once you are done, wait for others to finish and when the judge gives you the go-ahead, repeat the same thing for the next four solves. After these are complete, you are free to leave the room and channel while the judge compiles your results.

Detailed Competition Directives

Before the competition

  • Register for Discord and CubingTime, both free

  • Make sure you have access to a device with working camera and microphone (can be computer or smartphone)

  • Be able to read standard cube notation to scramble a cube (ex. R U L’ D2…)

  • Have something that can cover a cube (piece of paper is sufficient)

  • Check your email and take note of your competition group number and room password. This has sent to you as well as a general schedule and group specific schedule after registration closed.

  • Review these directives!

During the competition

1) First join the Ottawa Cubing Discord server, then join the Competition Ẁaiting Room audio channel and/or General Event text channel on Discord at your leisure around 1 pm.

2) Attend the information session at 1:15 pm by joining the Waiting Room audio channel where we’ll run through how to use CubingTime. We invite to join the Ottawa Cubing Practice room on CubingTime which will be used for the demonstration.

3) At 1:30, we will call the first group. If you are not in the group, feel free to keep practicing in CubingTime and hanging out in the Waiting Room channel (not mandatory though). If you are in the group, join the “Competition” audio channel, turn on your microphone and camera, making sure it’s at an angle where the cube would be visible when solving. Join the group named Ottawa Cubing Competition group X corresponding to your group (you may need to wait for it to be created - do not create your own)

Competing Rules: Upon entering a CubingTime room, first make sure to enable inspection (see screenshots below). During a round, you’ll have 5 solves which you will do at the same time as others in your group. When a scramble is available and the judge indicates you can start scrambling, orient your cube with white top, green front and scramble your cube according to the provided on-screen scramble, then cover it with the cube cover. We will be working on a best effort basis, and won’t be checking to make sure every cube is scrambled correctly. After this, when you are ready, tap the spacebar, uncover and inspect your cube! Within 15 seconds, when you’re ready, tap the spacebar again and solve the cube, finishing with another spacebar press. Once you are done, wait for others to finish and when the judge gives you the go-ahead, repeat the same thing for the next four solves. After these are complete, you are free to leave the room and channel while the judge compiles your results.

Spectating Rules: We recommend you watch the Youtube Live competition stream at youtube.com/watch?v=kz_C1RnkvOE to spectate. This is a public live stream and will remain posted after the competition.

After everyone has done their solves, we will calculate the rankings and send the results of the first round into the Discord competition text chat. This will display the results of the competitors who made it to the next round (or final, depending on the number of competitors). The final will have the same format, and will begin shortly after results have been posted.

4) Once all results of the competition are over (after the final round) and the results compiled, we’ll have an awards ceremony and gift certificate draw in the Waiting Room audio channel.

5) After the awards, you are free to stay and hang out, do some more solves in the Ottawa Cubing Practice room on CubingTime as long as you wish.
